Obama and the Audacity of Failure: Chris Stevens, the Benghazi Cover Up, the Tragedy of Libya
In the latest on the probe of the Benghazi cover up, on Friday, Darrell Issa, R-Calif., the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, released documents that clearly demonstrate the Obama administrations grossly neglegent failure to protect Ambassador Chris Stevens, the US Consulate in Benghazi, and the National Security interests of the United States.
Contrary to Washington’s initial explanation provided to the American people that the event was a “spontaneous reaction to the video”, the evidence, including recent testimony of witnesses in the investigation, reveals that Washington was immediately aware that the murder of the Ambassador was a terrorist attack.
The newly released evidence also clearly shows, in recent months prior to the attack, the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice, were fully aware of the mounting presence of terrorist control within the city.
The situation in the region had become so dire, that employees of the US Consulate were concerned that they had taken on the tone of “a broken record” in their reports to Washington.
The documents released reveal that as early as February, 2012, the situation was rapidly escalating out of control, and the Consulate made every effort to appraise the appropriate agencies and request assistance.
Rather than respond to the repeated advisories from Benghazi with additional security, the State Department chose to utterly ignore the escalating crisis. In April of 2012, a homemade bomb was thrown over the fence at the Consulate. In June of 2012, the Consulate was again attacked with an “improvised explosive device”, and an Islamic militant group took credit for the assault. Later in June, the Consulate in Benghazi again expressed their urgent concerns and notified Washington that the banners of Al Qaeda had been hoisted, and flew freely over certain Libyan government buildings and training centers.
After months of repeated advisories from the Consulate that had gone unheeded at the White House, within hours of his murder, Chris Stevens had signed a cable once more outlining “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces.
As Washington chose to look the other way, even Libyan citizens were frightened, and spoke to Americans within the city to express their fears.

The Audacity of Failure
As more evidence presents itself, the American people are left to rightfully question the failures of the Obama Administration to protect our interests in Libya, and the lives of Ambassador Stevens and three other American’s killed in the Al-Qaeda linked terrorist attack on our Consulate.
What is extremely disturbing is the apparent harsh reality that the Administration has sought political gain and advantage rather than accurately communicate the urgent and threatening foreign policy crisis in Libya, and elsewhere throughout the Middle East.
Determined to trumpet the death of Osama Bin Laden as his crowning achievement on the campaign trail, Obama, his campaign staff, and Democrats far and wide, have woefully failed to appropriately inform the American public of the alarming rise in Al Qaeda’s strength, and their role in the recent uprisings. Throughout the days following the attack, Al Qaeda rallied tens of thousands to protest against the United States, and openly called for the assassination of American diplomats. Blatant acts of war were commited on sovereign American soil at our embassies in the region, while the White House apologized to the perpetrators.
Furthermore, while Jihadists burned Obama in effigy, and led violent protests across the Middle East against the United States, spokesmen such as Jay Carney continued to declare their rage was not against the US, and Obama’s foreign policy, but rather directed at the video, “Innocence of Muslims”.
During the Vice Presidential debate, Joe Biden directly contradicted witnesses who had testified in the current investigation, and stated the White House had no knowledge of any need for additional security in Benghazi. Quoting Biden:
“We weren’t told they wanted more security. We did not know they needed more security there”
The documented evidence released this past Friday and noted above, utterly contradicts Mr. Biden’s outright misrepresentation of fact. Today, on Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace was joined by Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill) to discuss the hard cold facts of the current cover up.
Almost simultaneously with this broadcast, as Senator Durbin wrongfully declared Al Qaeda to be “on their heels”, the news broke that in Jordan, a key ally of the United States, Jordanian authorities had just foiled a major Al Qaeda terror plot that would have created loss of life tantanmount to “9/11 two”. The plot was to bomb shopping malls, hotels, Western embassasies, and assassinate more western diplomats, such as Ambassador Stevens. Officials in Jordan believe the plot was hatched as early as last June.
Senator Dick Durbin has demonstrated he is either woefully out of touch with the current foreign policy crisis in the Middle East, or he is continuing in the vein of the current trend in Washington, which is to seek political advantage for Obama rather than protect American interests and accurately inform the American people of the heightened state of terrorist activity in the Middle East region.
The Tragedy of Libya
The murder of Ambassador Stevens was a horrific tragedy and the legacy he may yet leave the American people is a dire wake up call to the policies ongoing in the current administration.
In addition, those who have literally sought justice for Ambassador Stevens are now virtually unknown by most Americans.
The people of Benghazi have clearly demonstrated their struggle for freedom is legitimate, but unfortunately, they are protected only by a fledgling new democratically elected government which is unable to secure the region against the rise in Al Qaeda presence and extremist threats.
In the days immediately following the attack, approximately thirty to forty thousand Libyans staged a protest within the city, demanding justice for Chris Stevens, and denouncing terrorism.
The following day, their outrage manifested in an all out assault against Ansar Al-Sharia, the Al Qaeda linked terrorist group believed responsible for the death of the Ambassador. Ansar Al-Sharia, and three other militias believed to be extremists, were attacked and forced to flee the city as their headquarters were set ablaze by the people of Benghazi.
To date, there has been no further retaliation in the murder of Ambassador Stevens. Throughout the Presidential campaign and in statements to the press, Joe Biden, Debbie Wasserman Shultz, and others in Washington, have chosen to defend the Obama administration.
More evidence has come to light that clearly proves the White House knew what was occuring at the time it occured. Emails have been released that were being sent at the time of the attack and in the immediate aftermath. It has also come to light, that Washington’s only response to the emails was to send a drone so they could watch the attack as it occured. Quoting Forbes:
Based on documents released by the House Oversight Committee, the day of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, September 11, the White House situation room starts receiving emails at about 1 pm that the mission is under hostile surveillance. The only response was that the Pentagon sends a drone armed with a video camera so that everyone in Washington can see what transpires in real time, as it happens, at the White House, at the State Department, at the Pentagon, at the CIA.
To review the emails and the article in it’s entirety, see Benghazi: Obama’s Actions Amount to Shameful Dereliction of Duty.
Also, Brett Baier of Fox News, did an outstanding in depth report. In a series of interviews, and a step by step re-enactment of events as they occured, it is chilling to watch the events unfold that culminated in the death of Ambassador Stevens.
“For this administration to assume that terrorists were not involved in the 9/11 anniversary attack would have required a willing suspension of disbelief.” ~Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, joint letter to Obama, October 19, 2012
