Benghazi Cover Up: Details on Tomorrow’s Hearings, Petraeus Offers Testimony, Eric Holder and FBI Face Questions
Four murdered American heroes, 3 investigative hearings, 2 disgraced generals, 2 questionable women, 2 sex scandals, and 1 cover up. Here is where we are at in a nutshell:
Attorney General Holder and FBI director Robert Mueller are facing serious new questions and inquiry over what they knew and why they failed to share that information when it was critical to do so.
In addition, the news continues to break over the sexual aspect of the scandals surrounding General Petraeus and General Allen, and threatens to overshadow three very important events tomorrow. Those three events are three hearings that the American people should be focused on. These three hearings will be convened tomorrow, on Thursday, November the 15th, 2012.
Also today, the news is currently breaking that Petraeus will soon voluntarily offer his testimony to members of the House and Senate.
The following is an update on all of the above, including what hearings are to be held, who will be holding them, and what we might expect.
The Justice Department and the FBI Face Questions
Attorney General Eric Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller are now facing scrutiny because they failed to inform the Obama administration and legislators of the House and Senate, that Petraeus was in the midst of an investigative probe by the FBI. Holder knew since June.
Nevertheless, Jay Carney stepped from behind the curtain at Oz yesterday to declare the Obama administration did not know about the probe on Petraeus.
This had a familiar ring to it for far too many American’s. As White House press secretary, it was Carney who assured the American people that Obama did not know it was a terror attack in Benghazi after it could no longer be denied that it was.
Also, on September 14th, it was Carney who stood before the people the day Chris Stevens and three slain at Benghazi were being flown home, and insisted it was the video which was responsible for their deaths. At this same press conference, he also claimed tens of thousands screaming death to America and “Osama not Obama” were not angry at Obama or the United States.
Apparently one qualification to be spokesman for the White House is the ability to keep a straight face while attempting to baffle the American people with nonsense. He almost provokes sympathy for his delicate position, as more and more Carney appears to be the White House clown sent out to placate restless children. The problem for the current administration is that the American people are not unruly children, nor are they willing to be deceived and placated as such.
The Stars Continue to Fall as Two Generals Come Under Scrutiny
As for General John Allen, he disputes both the number of email exchanges with Jill Kelley, and the nature of the emails.
Although initial reports indicate General Allen participated in 20-30,000 emails with Kelley that contained “inappropriate communications”, advocates for the General stated that it was more like a few hundred emails, and it was not inappropriate communication. However the latest report says that the communications were sexually explicit, and were tantamount to “phone sex”. It’s hard to say who is telling the truth here. I will not make a decision on this aspect of this case either way without knowing more. But if it is true, one has to wonder why it is that FBI agents and Generals feel the need to take off their shirts and talk dirty to Ms. Kelley. Or do we really need to wonder at all?
Some may speculate that the gentlemen may have been provoked to do so. However, like many Americans, I don’t really care about late night chatter between General Allen and Ms. Kelley. That is an issue that may be more troubling to their respective spouses. At this point, in light of current circumstances, to be overly concerned with such possible misconduct would be tantamount to yelling fire at a contained barbeque pit while the rest of the nation goes up in flames in the midst of a wildfire.
General Petraeus is another matter entirely.
While it may be entertaining for some to contemplate the Jerry Springer aspect of the scandal, it cannot be ignored that when all is said and done, it is possible Petreaus’ prior testimony was compromised, misleading, and aided by the current administration in their ongoing cover up.
And this is the aspect of the Petraues scandal that is troubling. This is what must be determined by our legislators.
His biographer Paula Broadwell, may have unwittingly given possible evidence that the General not only knew it was a terrorist attack when he stated otherwise in recent hearings, but her statements indicate he may in fact have leaked classified information to Broadwell.
A critical note: Her statements include the fact that Petraeus and the administration knew within 24 hours it was a terrorist attack. The problem for Petraeus is that he neglected to say so in investigative hearings. On the contrary, in his prior testimony before legislators, he promoted the Obama administration’s excuse that it was an angry mob upset over a video.
So while I am not really concerned about the circumstances of General Allen, I do care if one of our finest Generals and top intelligence officials felt compelled to mislead our legislators and the American people in the midst of the worst cover up in American history because he was implicated in a sex scandle.
Yesterday, nationally syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer spoke to the very plausible reasons on “why” Petreaus may have felt compelled to mislead the Senate and the American people:
Meanwhile, the news is breaking as I write this, that General Petraeus will be testifying, though apparently not at the House and Senate Committee Intelligence hearings scheduled for tomorrow. According to Fox, Petraeus will be testifying off-site to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Friday about his Libya report. Arrangements are being made for his additional testimony to the House Intelligence Committee.
Three hearings are slated for tomorrow. The Senate Intelligence Committe, The House Intelligence Committee, and the House Committee on Foreign affairs will be holding hearings tommorow. The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs began closed door briefings yesterday. And one organization, Special Operations Speaks, will be presenting their petition to the House, with over 100,000 signatures demanding a special investigation by a special prosecutor.
What to Expect on Thursday, November 15, 2012
The Senate Intelligence Committee is headed up by Chairman Diane Feinstein (D-CA). Senator Feinstein has previously stated there was no question it was a terrorist attack, that there may have been problems with security and intelligence, that not enough was done to beef up security, and she has been a key player in instigating the investigation into “why” the Committee was not informed of the probe on Petraeus.
Also on this committee, is Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-FL). He has actively attempted to get answers from the beginning. The following is a video of an interview he had in October with Fox News:
The Senate Intelligence Committee will convene their closed door hearing tomorrow, at 2:30 pm.
The House Intelligence Committee will also convene a hearing tomorrow. The House Intelligence committee is lead by Republican Congressman Mike Rogers of Michigan. Congressman Rogers is a former officer of the United States Army, and a former Special Agent for the FBI. Also on this committee, is Congressman Pete King (R-NY).
Congressman King has been extremely engaged in finding answers on the Benghazi cover up. Congressman King is also the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
Congressman Tom Rooney (R-FL), is also on the committee. Congressman Rooney was a judge advocate in the United States Army. He also served as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney on Fort Hood, TX prosecuting all civilian crimes on post, and he was selected to teach Constitutional and Criminal Law at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The House Intelligence Committee will convene their closed door hearing tomorrow also.
In addition to these two hearings, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will be holding an open door hearing tomorrow. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) is the chairman of this committee. She has made every attempt to have Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appear to testify, however Secretary Clinton has been in Australia attending wine tasting events as she attempts to help the Australian government prepare their defense cuts. Chairman Ros-Lehtinen has indicated she will subpeona Clinton if need be for later hearings, and she joined Greta Van Susteren of Fox News in a recent interview to discuss tomorrow’s hearing:
Also on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is Congressman Mike Kelly (R-PA). Congressman Kelly has repeatedly demanded answers on Benghazi. Congressman Kelly is also a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. As such, in early October, he participated in one the original hearings following the attack. The following video of Kelly speaking to Charlene Lamb from the State Department and others at previous hearings may give us a glimpse into what will occur in the upcoming hearings:
Congressman Kelly, and the legislators above, along with other House Reps and Senators who have diligently pursued answers, are to be commended.
Also, as I previously wrote here, Special Operations Speaks is an organization comprised of former Navy Seals and Special Ops veterans that has been gathering signatures for their petition to demand a special investigation headed by a special prosecutor to investigate Benghazi. They have been very successful in their endeavors.
In addition to the hearings going on tomorrow, in a press conference at 3:45, they will present their petition with 100,000 signatures on Capital Hill to Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX). Additional Congressmen will likely be in attendance. To learn more about Special Operations Speaks and their ongoing efforts, please visit their website.
When all is said and done, the wheels of justice will begin to at last turn tomorrow in earnest for the those who died in Bhenghazi. And for Americans who have been lied to by those in power entrusted with the welfare of our country, this is a welcome and neccessary event for the benefit of the nation.
Those who have perpetuated the cover up will no longer be able to do so. And those responsible from the onset will be held accountable.
We have the wisdom of our founding fathers to thank for that. For they set up a government that enables representatives of the people to take action on our behalf. No one branch of our government has absolute power. It is this, the wisdom of our founders, that prohibits the success of this cover up.
On the heels of this horrific tragedy, while upon the precipice of a national crisis, it is a remarkable time in our nations history, as we witness our government in action as it was set down to be by our fathers. We also owe our profound thanks to those legislators who have well served the people and the nation, in their efforts to bring accountability to those responsible, to preserve national security, and obtain justice for all concerned.
“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.” ~James Garfield, 1877
UPDATE 11/16/2012: The hearings were held yesterday. Legislators emerged outraged and gave statements. Also today, Petraeus gave his testimony. To see the latest update with videos of legislators in hearings, and more information, please click here.
